About Sarah Wise

Described by bassist Will Lee (The Late Show with David Letterman) as a "truth teller," Sarah is an alt-americana singer-songwriter drawing influence from the raw emotion of Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin and Margo Price, with confessional lyrics that are defiant and searing, vulnerable and searching.

Sarah has gigged and toured extensively throughout New York City and the northeast, making regular appearances at Rockwood Music Hall, The Bitter End, Arlene’s Grocery, Pete’s Candy Store and more, and newly resides in Los Angeles.

Her debut single Hang Tight, co-produced by Tim Hatfield (Death Cab for Cutie) and Ann Klein (Ani DiFranco) with Clifford Carter (James Taylor) on keys, Jack Daley (Lenny Kravitz) on bass, Tony Mason (Shooter Jennings) on drums and Klein on lead guitar, was featured in “The Sleepless,” and she eagerly awaits returning to the studio to record her debut EP.

Along with writing and performing her original work, Sarah concurrently wears a variety of hats in the music and entertainment industry: as a day manager and business consultant for independent artists as well as a live and session background vocalist (Garland Jeffreys, Lizzie and the Makers, Clara Lofaro), producer, talent contractor, talent buyer (The Bitter End), live sound engineer, and piano and voice instructor (Lyon Music, Piano Teacher Girl, Aimee Art Productions), and she proudly serves as the Associate Director of Artist Bookings at Odyssey Associates.

Testimonials

“Though I’ve been a professional singer for years, it’s taken a lot for me to get up the courage to commit to piano lessons. I knew I needed the right teacher to get me over my lifelong ‘I’m not smart enough to learn how to REALLY play piano’ phobia. I’m so happy I found Sarah! Her no-nonsense, ‘you got this’ attitude has been invaluable. She’s knowledgeable, kind, and really enjoys teaching. If you’re looking for a non-judgmental and patient guide who will support you through your piano-learning journey, I highly recommend Sarah. She’s got this!”

Janet La Valley, singer/artist

"I’ve been more than happy to send my clients to Sarah when they’re in need of everything a record label used to do for artists. Why her? Because she’s uniquely positioned as an artist herself, and she learned how to run recording sessions and projects from me. Anyone I’ve sent her way has thanked me for finally getting the help they’ve needed in today’s music industry."

Robert L. Smith, Oscar and Grammy winning producer, engineer and owner of Defy Recordings

"Sarah Wise was one of the first people who actually believed in me and my music. Initially, I brought Sarah on my team because I was a new artist based out of Long Island who just wanted to play some shows in NYC - she immediately exceeded all of my expectations. For starters: she landed me a month-long residency without me having any sort of performance reel. She also assisted me in growing my network of other artists and industry professionals. However, I think the the most valuable service Sarah can provide any artist, at any level, is her coaching. She has a real knack for it. My voice and my stage presence have greatly improved because of her. Sarah is one bad mama!"

Kalene, artist

"Sarah has a natural talent for teaching, delivering the right blend of fun and structure to support my daughter’s growth as a pianist and musician. Sarah’s attention to detail combined with her kind and patient encouragement have helped my daughter flourish."

— Saskia S, parent

“I’ve been lucky enough to work with Sarah as she mentors, helps and guides other artists. She understands what it means to work with artists, because she is one herself. I love Sarah’s instincts. She sees both the big picture (like the ‘arc’ of a setlist) and the subtle details (like a bass drum pattern, or a backing vocal arrangement). She knows the ultimate goal is communication with the audience, and she knows how to facilitate that. Her presentation of ideas is thoughtful, helpful - and I’ve found she’s usually right! And, she is always open to discuss those ideas in a really clear, efficient, honest and dare I say soulful way. That, to me, is Sarah!”

Larry Saltzman, guitarist/music director (Simon and Garfunkel, Bette Midler)

“It’s rare to find someone who is versatile enough to handle gig booking, band contracting, music directing, artist fashion design, and track/album production —and all at a high level—but I’ve seen Sarah wear all the above hats, and she really can do it all. If you’re a musical artist hoping to bring your act to the next level in any of these areas she’s an amazing resource.”

Lucas Shine, guitarist/music director (Jaira Burns, Brother Jocephus)

“Sarah has the unique ability to be a teammate not just to the artist, but to everyone in the room, and by the end of my first rehearsal with Sarah, I felt like I’d known her for years. Along with her own project, Sarah builds bands from the ground up, music directs, produces, contracts, manages schedules, books shows and somehow always knows who to call for what! Sarah’s diligent, nurturing and committed, calm under pressure and always ready to step outside or hop on the phone when someone in an organization needs her. Sarah empowers me as a musician and as a person and cultivates an atmosphere both onstage and off that brings out the best in everyone.”

Caitlin Kalafus, drummer/artist (Cyndi Lauper, The Naked and Famous)

“One word to describe Sarah: tenacious. She is not shy about approaching anyone, be it for booking, promotions and, most importantly, standing up for what’s right. Sarah goes to bat for her artists, works hard and cares deeply about what she does and genuinely doing the best for her clients.

She is reliable and focused and not afraid to put herself out there so you don’t have to! ”

Alex Nolan, guitarist/producer/music director (Cyndi Lauper, Toshi Reagon)
